The robotics industry is growing more rapidly than expected. Predictions state that the industrial robotics market will nearly triple in less than 10 years. This means that as the robotics market is getting stronger, it is also becoming highly competitive. Therefore, Scape Technologies and Blue Ocean Robotics entered a RoBi-X Partnership aiming at bringing new bin-picking solutions, created by Scape Technologies, to the global market.
The need for automation
The manufacturing industry is dealing with a lot of parts picking during the production processes. Due to the lack of flexible robotics solutions, the picking, particularly bin-picking was done manually, what often put a lot of physical load on the factory employees. The existing robotics solutions had a problem with parts recognition and lacked flexibility that would make the robots payable. Scape Technologies, a Danish automation and software company, designed a smart bin-picking solution that could solve this problem. However, the company experienced difficulties with market segmentation and the introduction of the innovative bin-picking solutions to the specific market segments based on the accurate industry’s requirements. That is why in February 2015 Scape Technologies entered the RoBi-X Partnership with Blue Ocean Robotics. The partnership aimed at bringing the new bin-picking solution to the market, and thus started in RoBi-GoToMarketphase.
Meeting the market requirements
While Scape Technologies had a partially developed software enabling the precise bin-picking process, Blue Ocean Robotics looked into use cases to define industries where the solution can be implemented. The research focused both on machine providers and end-users (manufacturers) and the distribution channels. Blue Ocean Robotics initiated communications with international integrators and sales partners of robotics platforms. The company also analyzed the technology available on the market, the sequence of the feeding process for the parts assembly and the limits of the existing picking technology. That approach led to creating the list of products that can be developed around the new bin-picking technology, such as stack bin-picker, small item picker or metal sheet picker. In the process of RoBi-GoToMarket phase the partners acquired funds for further development of the described products from The Market Development Fund (Markedsmodningsfonden)and Innovation Fund Denmark (Innovationsfonden).
Have this inspired you to disrupt your industry and create new robots for your product and services portfolio?
The result of this efforts are flexible bin-picking solutions for parts placed in bins in random, semi-structured or structured order. Bin-pickers are vision-guided robots capable of locating and picking a range of individual parts from bins and feeding them into machines or welding fixtures. The robot can adapt to picking new parts and optimize the process. Thanks to its flexibility, the solutions can work 24 hours a day. It can work as an autonomous robot as well as a collaborative one, like in Audi production line, where the robot takes care of lifting the heavy parts during the assembly process.
Conquering the market
The success in developing and implementing standardized and highly flexible bin-picking solutions allows easy adaption to each customer’s special needs and production environment all over the world. The innovation of the technology combined with the extensive market research led to the enthusiastic reception of the product on the market. But the sales process of a new and complex product proved to be a challenge. Therefore, during the RoBi-ScaleUp phase of the partnership, Blue Ocean Robotics and Scape Technologies together with other partners involved in the R&D ReconCell project, worked on INHANCER. INHANCER is a new collaborative web-based digital platform to support the complex selling process. INHANCER increased lead generation and collected feedback from potential customers and development collaborators about the new robotic solution. The INHANCER application contributed to the overall business growth. To additionally support the global sales and marketing Blue Ocean Robotics also used its well established international sales partners network. The success of the RoBi-X Partnership with Scape Technologies has resulted in further cooperation on the new projects.
